Tree Trimming & Pruning Services We Offer:

Thinning

We thin trees to reduce excess weight on the end of branches and to enhance their ability to withstand storms. This is particularly important for large Pacific Northwest trees. Wind can catch on dense-foliage branches, exerting pressure upon them like wind catching a sail. Large branches can potentially break during high winds and storms due to these high pressures. Thinning allows the wind to pass through the foliage. Tree pruning to thin the tree crown also allows light to penetrate the canopy and reach the inner, lower leaves, as well as plants growing beneath the tree. Thinning also increases air circulation throughout the canopy, which helps to discourage diseases such as powdery mildew and leaf rusts and enhances the ability of its leaves to take in carbon dioxide.

Tree Hazard Pruning

Reducing the weight on the end of branches also enhances their ability to withstand storms. Often it is this excess weight that can cause branches to break. Tree hazard pruning also diverts trees from the path of utility lines and clears obstructed views for drivers.

Cleaning

If a tree hasn’t received any professional care for some time, it could be in need of some clean up. Our crew will come in and remove dead, dying, and diseased branches. We also remove or reduce any limbs with reduced vigor or weak attachments. Frontier Tree also assesses your tree for structural integrity and will remove any branches that cross through the center of the tree or compete with another branch. Following these principles will ensure a nice, open canopy and reduce the potential for diseases and storm damage.

Raising

We prune to remove the lower branches of the tree for clearance. This allows for more space for pedestrians or vehicles to pass by, increased air circulation, and more room for shady plants to grow underneath.

Reduction

Sometimes trees need to be reduced in size. Bad pruning techniques such as “topping” can seek to address the same need but to the great detriment of the health and beauty of the tree. Reduction instead seeks to reduce the size of the tree without compromising tree health by reducing main leading branches back to lower side branches. This technique is needed when the tree has become too big for the space or clearance is needed for power lines or views. When properly executed, reduction will not leave ugly stubs on your branches like topping does.

Most people have a variety of trees on their property, all of which may require different methods of pruning. We will only recommend those that benefit your tree’s health.

Fine Pruning of Specimen Trees

Fine pruning is a type of pruning done to specific ornamental trees to create a more natural and balanced shape. The pruning cuts made during fine pruning are generally smaller and done with hand pruners over time. Smaller branches are removed as opposed to larger branches. Japanese Maples are commonly fine pruned as well as some Dogwoods, Magnolias, Stewartias, smaller fruit trees, and some evergreens. It is important to keep up with the fine pruning of ornamental trees in the landscape so they reap the full benefit over time.

Hedge Trimming

Hedges can create privacy for homeowners as well as a sound barrier. There are a variety of hedges used in the Pacific Northwest landscape such as Laurels, Boxwoods, Arborvitae, Leyland, and False Cypress. We have experience pruning hedges down to the proper size and keeping them aesthetically pleasing. There are proper selections and techniques for keeping hedges in the landscape looking healthy. If you have multiple hedges throughout your property, our team is able to maintain them with ease.
